Learning to Live With Uncertainty Instead of Fighting It

Why Uncertainty Feels So Uncomfortable

Uncertainty eels uncomfortable because it breaks the illusion of control. We like to think we know where we’re going, what will happen, and how to handle it.

But does it really work that way?

When you lack clarity, your mind tries to fill those gaps as quickly as possible. You look for answers, certainty. Anything that gives you a sense of stability. Not necessarily because it’s correct, but because it’s easier.

The problem is that this need for certainty often pushes you into rushed decisions or into accepting answers you haven’t questioned.

Albert Einstein, theoretical physicist

The Mistake of Trying to Eliminate Uncertainty

For a long time, I thought the goal was to reduce uncertainty as much as possible. Especially at work, although it clearly applies to everyday life as well.

Having everything clear before acting, that was the priority. Planning every step, avoiding the unknown.

But over time, I realized that this is not only unrealistic, it’s also very limiting. In practice, many important decisions are made without having all the information.

Trying to eliminate uncertainty doesn’t make it disappear. It only delays action.

The moment I realized I Wouldn’t Have All the Answers

I remember when some colleagues and I wanted to launch a project (something completely different from what we usually did) We stayed stuck in analysis, waiting to have everything ready bejore starting.

We reviewed options, budgets, locations. Everything, trying to make things perfectly clear. We thought The right moment or the right signal would appear.

It never did.

What did come was the need to decide anyway, with incomplete information. And although it was uncomfortable at first, it was also revealing. I didn’t need total certainty to move forward.

Unfortunately, the project never materialized with us. However, others who had the same idea and actually executed it made a lot of money.

How to Start Living With Uncertainty

The first step is accepting that uncertainty is not a flaw in the process. It is part of the process. You ar not lost. You are in a stage where not everything is visible yet.

The second step is to act with the information you have. Not perfect, not complete, but enough to take the next step.

The third step is to adjust along the way. Clarity often comes after action, not before.

Uncertainty Is Also a Sign of Growth

When everything is completely clear, chances are you are just repeating something you already know. Uncertainty appears when you are stepping into something new, unfamiliar, and something you know you are not fully prepared for.

It feels uncomfortable because you don’t have clear references. But it is also a sign that you are expanding the way you think.

Avoiding it doesn’t protect you. It limits you.

Joseph Campbell, mythologist and writer

Stop Fighting What You Can’t Control

Something you need to be very clear about: Not everything can be anticipated. Not everything can be planned. And not everything needs to be solved before you begin.

Learning to live with uncertainty does not mean resignation. It menas moving forward even whe you don’t have all the answers.

In the end, progress does not depend on having complete clarity, but on being able to move without i.t
